Let's go shopping....and take a trip!

The week's BrisStyle Let's go shopping is inspired by an upcoming TRIP squared. It's my TRIP trip.

In my world at the moment, T.R.I.P. stands for 'translating research into practice' in health care. It's all about taking something that's tried and true, often recognised as best practice and written up into guidelines, but for many reasons, is not being followed by those working at the coalface. I'm going to be taking part in a 2 year training program that teaches me how to work out the best way to help people who provide health care to change some of these practices and measure the changes to prove to the bean counters that they've made a difference, not only in the bottom line, but with happier patients and better outcomes. My little project will be about making life a bit better for women with gestational diabetes.

I was thinking all psychadelic and trippy, when I searched etsy for some virtual window shopping goodness this morning, but I realised I was also embarking on a journey in my professional career that will be taking me to some exciting places and in some weird and wonderful directions. ...mushrooms, of course!

I've got some new season white buttons from 'fungi (it'll grow on you)' and I've got high hopes. I've had two boxes of swiss browns before and had quite a few 'flushes' from the little beauties. That's the technical term for mushroom 'crops'! The box was very affordable and I've found the mushrooms stay fresh for yonkers. Makes you realise how long those little dudes sit around in the shops.

So, it was preparation time this morning. I'll post regular progress shots and will certainly take a few shots at harvest time, too.

The first step involves adding water to the bag of casings and then spreading this over the compost material.

Once this is all done and dusted, it's time to find a cool, dark place for the box to let them work their magic. I've got my special mushroom spray bottle too for their daily refresher, too.

Let's go shopping ... in Japan

These week's BrisStyle 'let's go shopping' is brought to us by the Land of the Rising Sun. Last year my cousin married a gorgeous Japanese lass and they'll be having a traditional Japanese wedding later this year which we'll (hopefully) be attending (counting the pennies at the momo). This in itself will be very special, but my toes are tingling at the thought of all of the fabric I'll be able to get my mitts on when I'm over there. I had an amazing three week holiday in Japan in 2008 and have wonderful memories of all of the places I visited. This time I'm not sure whether to re-visit some of these sites or to keep the memories intact and go visiting elsewhere. We'll be there for the cherry blossom festival and the thought of that has inspired my choices this morning.

The (in)constant gardener

I managed to get out into the garden in the last few days of my holiday. My poor little courtyard is well and truly drought-proof. When I first moved in, there was regular watering and even one of those light green squishy tape hoses with little holes all the way along that I'd put on quite regularly. Over the years, with water restrictions and various other distractions, I tend to only get out and mulch, replant and smile proudly at my (our) handiwork twice a year. Despite the neglect, the garden seems to be doing very well, especially my corner of bromeliads, in all their spike-y prettiness.

Further benefits of my neglect can be seen on my balcony. I knew I had a knack with anthuriums (perhaps a photo to my own handiwork would be more convincing?). I've a few that look striking and seem to look better the more I forget they're there. My pièce de résistance, much to my surprise, is my not-so-delicate and frail orchid. I bought it a little while ago and after a brief flower (inside) it was done. I was disappointed - it wasn't cheap and I thought it'd done its dash. I followed the instructions, chopped it off at a node and put it somewhere cool to wait until next year. After ignoring it (outside) for a month or so, *hey presto*!

Hello one and all and a happy new year to you,

I've 'gone dark' of late. All it takes is one mega-anti-virus software update at the end of the month to wipe out a download quota. Well, it's re-set now and I'm posting, liking and perving on blogs of Ryan Gosling paired with some very funny crafty quips. heart squared. ok, here's one of my *many* favourites (oh, so hard to choose).

How was everyone's Christmas/New Year's break? I had a veeery low key couple of weeks off. Lots of healing - of skin and of resolve.

My fuel gauge was on empty at the end of 2011. Talk about sleep debt; I enjoyed a run of days waking up at morning tea! Seems to be back firing - I'm bounding out of bed at 5.45am most days now and even managing to go for a walk before work. Tick, there's a new year's resolution I'm having some luck with. I'm also leaving work on time (tick) and not bringing it home with me (tick) ... although the first week of work's not quite over....

I took my Bernette in for a service over the break too. Seems you *can* do a little tweaking yourself on the new electric machines. I'd been happily pottering with my mum's Bernina; familiar with where the lint accumulated and where the oil drops were required. When I bought my new one I was reassured that none of this was required, and you 'couldn't get into the body of the machine if you tried'. Well, I got a scolding from Mr Bernina yesterday when the build up of lint was 'out of this world' and one of the checks that should have been done every 8 hours hadn't been done for, ahem, almost 2 years. Yes, I had noticed it running at variable speeds and yes, I would like to know where to put oil on the poor little machine.

Other new year's resolutions? I don't need to make one about sewing - I have no trouble finding time for that lovely endeavour. I went to a 'early career researcher's workshop' at a conference I attended recently. A panel of 6 or 7 very clever and successful boffins were telling the story of how they got to where they were. Most told the familiar story of a slog of study, grant writing, midnight oil and passion for their work. Whilst this is no doubt true and required, one of the erudite and widely respected speakers reflected on the need for multiple pursuits in life, rather than just focusing on your life's one passion. When the bottom falls out of it (or less dramatically) it just fails to float your boat at that particular time, there's somewhere else to get your thrills, invest your energies, and reason to get out of bed. Not all guns have to be blazing at once, but work, hobbies (plural), family and friends should all be valued equally. It certainly can become a balancing act, but sometimes what keeps us happy.

The 12 pubs of Christmas

Yes, catchy title and Yes, I was suitably worried in the lead up to the festivities as part of our christmas celebrations as to the capacity of my liver to take me through the day, keeping me away from the gutter and any errant kebab vans I might happen upon in the wee hours. And a disclaimer: binge drinking isn't smart or clever. Even the Australian Government says so here, but I did take little sips, plenty of water and noms along the way.

And, as all the trendy movies do, we'll finish with the end and then trek through the day. I only made it to pub 10. Didn't picture me as a quitter? Me neither, but but in full throes of my efudex treatment and alcohol being a vasodilator and all, I think I should get a gold star for even turning up.

So, the festivities kicked off with a champagne breakfast at Sassafras, Paddington. Everyone was in the swing of the season with Christmas colours, themed shirts, baubles as earrings or all of the above. the sensible owners didn't allow us our first tipple until after 10am. Something about liquor laws ... As breakfast wound to a close we were informed that the person sitting opposite us would be our buddy for the day and our goody bag and pub-passport was distributed. special wrapping bows were in the bags of a few. Two of us ended up with santa hats (and were informed we could order others to drink if we weren't referred to as Mr/Mrs Claus) and one lucky punter ended up with a camel suit (!)(ages 3-5(!!) .. cue: many camel toe jokes, of course). Our survival packs consisted of a pub-passport, no-doze, panadol and a hairy lemon, as well as an obligatory vom-bag ('if you're going to spew, spew into this..' and some scooby snacks.

Onwards to pub 2: the Paddo. Some were into the beer or spirits (or even 2), but I couldn't face anything harder than a pimms and lemonade as it wasn't even 11. Time didn't seem to phase some of the non-pub crawl patrons who were propping up the bar, but I suppose I can't throw stones in that glasshouse since, technically, i'd been drinking since 10.

A hop-skip-and-a-jump across to iceworks was our third stop - with quite a few comments of, 'oh, now i'm starting to feel it' coming out. The order-cards also made their appearance here - ordering either a slow down (whoa-nelly!) or stop dragging the chain. No one was red carded, even around pub 12 or 13, where I heard there was some stage diving.

The Caxton was our 4th stop and lunchtime already. The poor mum, dad and kids who arrived after us and were seated near us in a near empty restaurant requested to be moved fairly soon after that. Sensible. Mr/Mrs Claus hats were re-allocated, as was the camel suit.

Some maxi-taxis then took us into town to Irish Murphys. Many a pretend 'where is everyone? I just ducked into the toilets and now everyone's gone' phone calls were made, as buddies were split up in different cabs. Buddies were re-united at I.Ms and ordered to do a drinks-swap. Whatever you ordered your buddy had to drink. The boys quizzed the barman about the worst drink combos they'd ever made and that was the origin of the sambucca and orange juice and two tequila shots, cordial and milk combos that were ordered.

The port office, pub 6, was where we met the pub crawl that numbered over one hundred punters. Carbon dating placed their longevity between 11 and 19 years and, as they swarmed into the pub with only one bar tender, we were impressed by their outfits, laminated lanyard cards and song booklet (from which we heard 'song number 9' which started after a sharp whistle from the leader). They streamed off as we were being explained the significance of the pegs and breathed a sigh of relief that they had just come from the pubs next on our list.

Heading towards the Belgian Beer Cafe we practiced placing pegs on unsuspecting members of the group. Obliviousness to a personal pegging and/or not finding said peg on outfit, whilst those around you counted down from 10 to 1 resulted in drinking 'two fingers' of your drink. Pub 7 to 10 had the heady combination of paranoia and drunkeness that resulted in most of us standing in one big circle, eyeing off everyone else in the group.

Following my fancy cherry beer - presented in the dunked glass, froth de-headed with the fancy barman's spatula - I decided on a hairy lemon. Others popped various other survival remedies from their bags and we all nommed a few chips and then were off to the stock exchange for SHOTS! More dancing camel action, peg paranoia and welcoming late-ring ins to the festivities before we headed to the victory. One of the tired and emotional amongst us took early leave for a spot of fresh air before we soon followed. Onto dinner and more drinks at the Pig and Whistle.

Here, more pegs were attached, pompoms were separated from their hats and much shite was spoken before our crowd dispersed. Pub ten was the watershed moment - a number of the pack peeling off for an earlier night, whilst the others clambered for cabs to the valley and three(!) more pubs .... So overall, the majority of the lords a leapin' and ladies dancing made it to thirteen pubs. I happily bussed it home (after 11 hours of festivities) and managed to wake up fresh as a daisy on sunday. An early walk along the river, some baking and christmas shopping wasn't the ending to the week end I expected and has left me with a false sense of how refreshing a pub crawl can be!

The post-holiday tiredness has kicked in (only half a week or so after my return). I do want to share my adventures, but I'm too tired to write at the moment. The pilgrimage..

I was recently on holidays pre and post conferencing in Adelaide (again). I took the opportunity to head down a few days early to explore Adelaide's surrounds. Whilst I did make it to Hahndorf last time (and enjoyed a number of winery and cheese shop stops), I didn't make it to Hans Heysen's property, The Cedars. That was the top of my 'must visit' list this time.

This 60 hectare property was where lived (moving in in the late 1800s) and painted. You could do a self-guided tour of the grounds, with informative displays of places he painted his distinctive works. You could easily see how the landscapes captivated his imagination and attention as you walked around the site and gardens.

There was also a guided tour of his studio (below, built in the early 1900s), as well as his house (with walls adorned with his paintings and sketches, as well as other famous works of art - a few Rembrandts thrown in for good measure!). The volunteer guides were full of stories about past distinguished visitors who were entertained and entertained there. Such a warm house, full of so many stories. Well worth a visit.

On Sunday, after a yum cha, I headed to McLaren Vale for some little sips. So many wineries to visit, so few designated drivers. I stopped in at K1/Geoff Hardy's wines (where I wished I was lunching on the deck, by the lake), Wirra Wirra (which would have been perfect for a picnic lunch), d'Arenberg (where I took some bigger sips), Coriole (where I stopped awhile amongst the gardens), and Chapel Hill (where I wished the suburb of my childhood had such an establishment).

Driving back to Adelaide I wondered if those sips had been too plentiful, when I happened upon this sight...

..but it turns out (from the number of comments I got on facebook) that it's just another Australian 'big' icon that *quite a few* of my friends had visited (some more than once!).

After these days of exploring, I had 3 days of concentrating at Glenelg, my favourite pallindromic seaside town. I then packed my bags and headed north into the Never Never (well, just south of the NN, to be precise). Stay tuned for the next installment.

I got such a buzz when I got home last night. The lovely Kimono Reincarnate alerted me to the fact one of my purses had been featured in the weekly MadeIt Monday New Finds newsletter.

Does this distinguish a hobbyist from a professional crafter? I still get such a thrill when someone buys something from my Etsy or Made-It shops .. and to be featured in a newsletter is such a 'name-up-in-lights-moment' and I suppose a validation, of sorts.

I also got a giggle - the doll next to my shelleyberelli purse could be me!

The weather behaved and so many smart shoppers were out, getting a head start on the Christmas lists. It's always so lovely to see the the many BrisStyle friends visit us, time and time again. And to catch up with BrisStylettes between sales.

Last night I sold both of the items I'd donated to the BrisStyle Chicks in Pink national breast cancer awareness month fund raising effort. I'm donating the total proceeds from the sales to Chicks in Pink. Two generous shoppers walked away with these shelleyberelli goodies.

I shared my stall with the lovely Moose & Bird:

The shelleyberelli market totes were a hit, as were my zippered purses. I'm going to get to work between now and my next market (BiDM - Racecourse Rd, 10 December) on more totes and some new ipad cases.

Chicks in Pink -the thinking chicks' charity

Many of you may be aware that October is national breast cancer awareness month. Breast cancer is the most common cancer amongst Australian women so throughout the month of October BrisStyle is pitching in with assitance to help raise much needed funds for chicks in pink!

For those of you who are not familiar with 'chicks in pink' they are a charity organisation which aims to raise funds which have a positive, significant and real impact on people who are affected by breast cancer. Their funds also contribue to the better understanding and treatement of breast cancer through medical research. Today, chicks in pink supports Mater Private Hospital Brisbane, Mater Private Hospital Redland, Mater Adult Hospital and Mater Medical Research Institute (PS extra special plug for shelleyberelli, who's involved in the 'Mothers and Babies' research theme). A little while back I found a new use for the pretty fabric I've been hoarding - feature pockets on simple calico tote shopping bags/beach bags. Well, since these seem to be selling like hot cakes, I decided to whip up a few more. This time I've branched out of my blue phase with a collection that includes a Japanese symbol print, a green, pink and blue lotus design and cute, bright woodland animals on a contrasting black background. I've started listing them in my etsy shop too.

In preparation for the BrisStyle indie Twilight Markets that are just around the corner, I have been sewing up a veritable storm. I've a new bag design I've been wanting to make for a while - I finally got myself in a sewing frame of mind again and whipped up these three new totes. Perfect for the weekly shopping trip or even a week end trip to the beach. Each has a handy outer pocket, as well as a divided inner pouch to keep your precious things safe.

I popped down to Spotlight yesterday and they had handy 20 metre calico rolls for sale, all packaged up and ready to go. Too good to resist. Seems there are plenty more totes to come.

i'm not one to shy away from a photography project... and i *might* have a shelf or three filled with photo albums. when my friend, Ms K (who many or may not be holding the stick in the bottom photograph) posted the link to the 'dear photograph' blog on her facebook wall it definitely tickled my fancy. i spent the morning pouring over old photos in my collection and also trying to peel old photos out of mum and dad's albums. i ended up with eight or nine kodak moments i wanted to re-create. due to light, angles and quality of some old photos, i think some shots were more successful than others, but i'll let you be the judge of that.

Ok, I'm sure that saying doesn't make sense to many people - let me give you the back story.

To me it's one of those Kath and Kim sayings that's uttered by someone trying to sound smart, but mixing their metaphors and throwing in a few good malapropisms for good measure... like Kimmy clutching at spanners or wanting to be effluent.

In my day job I am somewhat less crafty and somewhat more interested in what people eat and ensuring it doesn't clog their arteries. Our favourite saying at work was coined by an enthusiastic, but confused patient who had been losing weight quite well, but had gone off track while on holidays. At her appointment she informed my colleague that she was back to where she'd started as her weight had piled back on 'with revengeance'. Kinda fits though, doesn't it?

Well, I'm back with the BrisStyle "let's go shopping". I've been absent for a few weeks, but am back with revengence. The sun's peeking through the clouds and I see a little blue sky around as well - that's put me in rather a sunny mood.

I've been meaning to post a blog about my not so recent holiday in the Flinders Ranges - and my lovely friend, Anita, reminded me that some of my friends across the oceans may be interested in my adventures. How lazy of me to upload all my photos onto facebook and expect everyone to log on and click through my virtual photo album. Is that like a 'slide night' of yore? The old kodak slides (well, not old on-the-day), some slotted in upside-down, nodding sagely, while thinking, 'hope this finishes soon, that fondue is looking tempting'. Even my mum, the inspiration for my trip (along with Hans Heysen), is reminding me that she hasn't seen my photos yet. The week that was..

It's hard to believe that it was only this time last week I was packing away the market table, washing the white table cloths and reflecting on the lovely day that was another BrisStyle indie Designers Market.

The Brisbane winter weather pulled out all stops to give us one of those sunny, clear days that we all love at this time of year ... ok, the breeze was a little crisp and it was more than a few degrees cooler in the shade. However, the Devonshire tea and warm scones, oh, and the sausage sizzle - both for a spot of fund-raising for and by the Australian Cattle Dog and Kelpie club of Queensland - kept everyone toasty warm.

I also enjoyed a morning tea treat, purchased from Bel at Enticing Icing.

Here's my set up - I was in the hall:

And had lovely neighbours to keep me company, including Mon Petit Poppet, Moose & Bird and Love, Marriage, Baby Carriage Gifts. Many BrisStylers donated a little something for our regular market raffle - this time raising money for the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation ... Two lucky winners each scored a pretty full basket full of goodies. Here's Helen drawing one of the winning tickets:

Later last week we also had the ABCD meet up in Brisbane. A Thursday night at the Uptown Drinks Lounge, above Crosstown Eating house. What a lovely way to spend an evening with some lovely ladies. Here's a sneak peek into the goody bag from the night.

Hello folks, I'm posting this one in as a blogger-at-large.

I'm in the city of churches and am buzzing about my imminent hike here. I am totally dropping off the grid for a good week or so. I was inspired by a number of sources - my mum hiked down here last year and I was captivated by her photos and stories from the trip. This was reinforced by my visiting the Hans Heysen exhibition at QAG last year.

Without the pressure of an imminent market I have little self-imposed sewing motivation at the moment. Seams are slowly sewn and buttons attached in spare moments I can grab in front of the Bernina. I have seven holdall handbags cut out and ready for assembly and have two and a half ready for you tonight (well, two - the half is unphotographed, but I hope to post it soon) . It's driving me crazy, as the fabric I'm sewing with at the moment is some of the most beautiful material I've used - I can't wait to see the finished products. I suppose you and I will have to wait a little longer. Here's something to whet your appetite in the meantime...

Contingency plans, ahoy! The hard working BrisStyle committee had their peepers glued to the BOM site all yesterday (which apparently made for some interesting viewing). Lots of yellows and reds, not to mention the slate coloured clouds lurking behind the city buildings, interspersed with clear blue skies, meant that our markets still went ahead last night, but were relocated above King George Square to 'the Deck'.

I've been otherwise occupied for most of 2011 and haven't really done much sewing since the flurry of activity around the 2010 Nov/Dec BrisStyle markets. Pity, pity, pity as a few of my lovely friends (props must go to the tres generous Akiko and Antoinette) have been o/s recently and brought me back brown paper packages, wrapped up in string ... and filled with delightful and interesting fabrics. I even had a trip to Melbourne's Tessuti fabrics - so the fabric pile's been calling me, like a siren song, but I've somehow resisted their charms.

I'm not sure how I came across this festival. It involves taking a photo an hour for 12 hours on the 20th April. I first took part in 2009 and was in a work orientation day.
